A hosted Matterport case study for MKM Building Supplies Boston. The model connects the captured trade counter and warehouse so it can support customer orientation and staff familiarisation. This project covers one branch only, and access depends on the relevant Matterport hosting remaining active.
MKM Building Supplies in Boston needed a practical way to show its trade counter and warehouse as one connected space. I created a hosted Matterport 3D model that lets people move through the captured branch online and understand how the main areas relate to one another.
The branch is at Boston Industrial Centre on Norfolk Street in Boston, Lincolnshire. This case study covers one MKM branch and does not imply a wider rollout across the group.
01The Brief
A builders' merchant is a functional environment rather than a styled interior. The useful result is not simply a collection of attractive viewpoints. It is a clear visual route through the areas customers and staff need to recognise.
For MKM Boston, the model needed to connect the trade counter and warehouse in a format that could be opened through a direct link or embedded on a web page. The intended applications were customer orientation and staff training, both of which benefit from being able to revisit the same captured layout.
02Capturing the Trade Counter and Warehouse
I scanned the branch point by point with a Matterport camera. Each scan position connects to the next, allowing the finished model to build a navigable view rather than a series of disconnected panoramas.
The dollhouse view is particularly useful here because it shows the relationship between the public-facing trade counter area and the larger warehouse space. Users can then move into the model to inspect the captured areas from ground level.
03Explore the MKM Boston Matterport Tour
The live model can support a first look at the branch, customer orientation and staff familiarisation. It does not show live stock and should not be treated as a substitute for current operational information from MKM.
04A Hosted Digital Asset
Matterport models are hosted on Matterport's platform. I supply a direct link and can provide the embed required for a website, but continued access depends on the relevant hosting remaining active. That is why I explain hosting terms clearly in every quote rather than describing the model as a permanent standalone file.
The hosted tour is usually live within a week of scanning. I confirm the expected timing, hosting position and any photography requirements with the project quote.
05Planning a Matterport Tour for a Commercial Space
The most useful starting brief includes the site address, approximate floor area, areas that need to be included, intended audience and target date. For a trade, retail or warehouse environment, it also helps to identify busy periods, restricted areas and any operational details that should remain outside the model.
I provide Matterport virtual tours and other commercial virtual tour formats across the UK. The right format depends on the size of the space, the intended use and how the finished asset needs to be shared.
