As a property photographer with over 17 years of experience in Somerset, I've had the pleasure of capturing homes in some of the most beautiful locations this county has to offer. But there's something truly special about Wells. It may be England's smallest city, but its property market packs a punch, offering a unique blend of history, charm, and modern living that makes it one of the most desirable places to live in the South West.
01A City Steeped in History
Whenever I have a shoot in Wells, I always try to take a stroll through the city centre. You can't help but be captivated by the stunning Wells Cathedral, a masterpiece of Gothic architecture that dominates the skyline. Just a stone's throw away is the famous Vicar's Close, the oldest purely residential street in Europe, with its charming, uniform houses and iconic chimneys. Then there's the Bishop's Palace, complete with its moat and resident swans who famously ring a bell for food. These historic landmarks aren't just tourist attractions; they're the heart and soul of Wells, creating a unique atmosphere that you just don't find anywhere else.
02A Diverse Property Landscape
The property landscape in Wells is as diverse as its history. In the city centre, you'll find beautiful medieval cottages and grand Georgian townhouses, each with their own unique character. As a photographer, I love the challenge of capturing these period features. I'm a big advocate for using natural light and High Dynamic Range (HDR) techniques to really bring out the details and textures of these historic homes, creating bright and inviting images that do justice to their heritage. While some photographers prefer using flash, I find that natural light often tells a more authentic story of the space.
As you move away from the centre, the properties become more modern, with a mix of Victorian terraces, 20th-century family homes, and contemporary new-build developments. The average house price in Wells is around £375,000, reflecting its popularity and the quality of life on offer. And with the Mendip Hills on the doorstep, many properties boast stunning views, which is where my drone photography really comes into its own. All of my packages include drone shots, which are perfect for showcasing a property's setting and its relationship to the beautiful surrounding countryside.
03More Than Just a Pretty Place
But Wells is more than just a pretty place. It's a vibrant community with a bustling market square that hosts a twice-weekly market, offering everything from local produce to artisan crafts. There's a fantastic selection of independent shops, cafes, and restaurants, and with Bristol and Bath just a short drive away, you're never far from the hustle and bustle of a larger city. I also cover property photography in both Bristol and Bath, so I know the area well.
For families, Wells offers a fantastic selection of schools, including the renowned Wells Cathedral School. And with the Mendip Hills, Cheddar Gorge, and the Somerset Levels all within easy reach, there are endless opportunities for outdoor adventures. I often find myself working in the nearby towns of Cheddar and Shepton Mallet, and each has its own unique charm and property styles.
