01Stone Farmhouses and Mill Conversions: Photographing Shepton Mallet's Character Properties

As a property photographer with over 17 years of experience covering Somerset, Bristol, and Bath, I've had the pleasure of capturing homes in some of the most beautiful parts of the region. One area that holds a special charm for me is Shepton Mallet and the surrounding Mendip Hills. It’s a place where history, stunning landscapes, and a unique property market come together, making it a fantastic area for homeowners and a rewarding challenge for a photographer.

Shepton Mallet itself is a historic market town with a rich heritage. It’s one of those places that feels authentically Somerset, with its traditional stone buildings and bustling market square. It’s not as famous as its neighbours, Wells and Frome, but it has a character all of its own. I’ve often found myself wandering through the town centre, admiring the architecture before a shoot. It’s this sense of history that I always try to capture in my photographs of properties here. It’s not just about showing the rooms; it’s about telling the story of the home and its place in the town.

One of the jewels in Shepton Mallet’s crown is Kilver Court. While the designer village has changed over the years, the gardens remain a stunning oasis. The backdrop of the viaduct is iconic, and it’s this blend of industrial heritage and natural beauty that you see reflected in the local property scene. You’ll find everything from classic Victorian terraces to more modern developments, each with its own appeal.

Just a stone's throw from the town, you’re into the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB). This is where the landscape really opens up and you find some truly special properties. I’m talking about classic stone farmhouses, beautifully converted barns, and secluded cottages with breathtaking views. As a photographer who prefers to work with natural light and High Dynamic Range (HDR) techniques, the Mendips are a dream. The quality of light you get over the hills, especially early in the morning or late in the afternoon, is just magical. It allows me to create images that are both true-to-life and have that little bit of extra wow factor that makes a property listing stand out.

02The Shepton Mallet Property Market

The property market in and around Shepton Mallet is as varied as the landscape. You have a real mix of property types, which is great for buyers looking for something a bit different. Based on recent data, the average property price in Shepton Mallet is around £278,000. Terraced properties, which are common in the town itself, average around £241,000. For a semi-detached home, you’re looking at an average of about £271,000, while detached properties, especially those with a bit of land in the surrounding countryside, can fetch upwards of £419,000.

What I love about the properties here is their character. The stone cottages are a particular favourite of mine. They have so much history and charm, and my job is to bring that out in the photographs. It’s about capturing the texture of the stone, the warmth of the fireplace, and the way the light falls through the windows. These are the details that make a buyer fall in love with a home before they’ve even stepped through the door.

03Capturing the Best of Your Shepton Mallet Home

Whether you have a modern apartment in the heart of Shepton Mallet or a sprawling farmhouse in the Mendips, the goal is the same: to present your property in its best possible light. My approach is always to work with the natural character of the home. I don’t believe in using excessive flash or artificial lighting, as I feel it can make a place feel cold and sterile. Instead, I use HDR techniques to balance the light and create images that are bright, airy, and inviting.

Drone photography is also a fantastic tool in this area. All of my packages include drone shots, and for properties in the Mendip Hills, it’s an absolute must. Being able to capture the house in its stunning rural setting adds a whole new dimension to the listing. It shows off the scale of the property, the size of the garden, and the incredible views that come with it.

I also offer Matterport virtual tours, which are a great way to give potential buyers a really immersive experience. They can ‘walk’ through the property from the comfort of their own home, which is a huge advantage in today's market.
