Granary Cottage is the kind of Cotswolds property that guests fall in love with before they've even stepped inside. Built from honey-coloured Cotswold stone with original arched windows, oak beams, and a stable door that opens onto a private garden, it has all the character and warmth that luxury holiday let guests are searching for. The owner had recently completed a sensitive renovation, blending period features with modern comforts, and needed photography that would communicate the cottage's unique personality to potential guests browsing Airbnb and direct booking platforms.

As a property photographer covering the Cotswolds, I work with holiday let owners who understand that their listing photos are the single biggest factor in whether a guest clicks "book" or scrolls past. Granary Cottage presented a wonderful brief: capture the cosy, inviting atmosphere of a beautifully dressed stone cottage without losing the architectural character that makes it special.

01The Brief

The owner wanted images that would appeal to couples and small groups looking for a premium Cotswolds retreat. The cottage had been renovated with care, keeping original features like the arched windows, exposed stone walls, and oak beams, while adding contemporary touches such as a modern kitchen island, brass fixtures, and bifold doors opening onto the garden. The photography needed to show the property exactly as guests would find it: warm, inviting, and full of character.

Before the shoot, I provided dressing advice to help the owner prepare the cottage. We discussed adding soft throws to the sofas, placing fresh flowers on the kitchen island and side tables, clearing surfaces of clutter while keeping a few tasteful accessories for warmth, and switching on all lamps and candles to create that soft, layered lighting that makes a space feel lived-in and welcoming. The goal was to present the cottage at its absolute best without making it look staged or impersonal.

02The Exterior

The exterior shots establish the cottage's character immediately. The front entrance, with its honey-coloured Cotswold stone, climbing plants, and traditional proportions, tells guests exactly what kind of property this is before they've seen a single interior image. For Airbnb listings, the main photo is everything, and a charming stone cottage exterior outperforms a generic interior shot every time.

The private patio garden is a genuine selling point for this property. The outdoor dining area, surrounded by established planting and sheltered by the cottage walls, gives guests a space to enjoy morning coffee or evening drinks in privacy. I shot this in natural daylight to show the garden as bright and usable rather than dark or overlooked.

03The Entrance & Hallway

The hallway sets the tone for the entire property. The panelled walls, warm pendant lighting, and carefully chosen accessories create an immediate sense of arrival. Guests scrolling through a listing make snap judgements, and a welcoming entrance hallway communicates that this is a property where every detail has been considered.

The living room is the heart of Granary Cottage, and I spent the most time here getting the composition and lighting right. The original stone arch is a stunning architectural feature that frames the space beautifully, and I positioned myself to make it a focal point in the first shot. The exposed oak beams and stone walls give the room its character, while the soft furnishings, throws, and cushions add the warmth that makes guests want to curl up with a book.

I shot the room from multiple angles to show how the space works. The wide shot demonstrates the generous proportions and seating arrangement, important for groups trying to understand whether everyone will be comfortable. The bifold doors shot shows the indoor-outdoor connection that's so appealing in summer, while the garden view through the doors helps guests imagine themselves in the space.

The cosy corner detail, with its layered throws and textured cushions, is the kind of image that stops people scrolling. It communicates comfort, quality, and thoughtfulness, exactly what luxury holiday let guests are looking for.

05The Kitchen

The kitchen balances modern functionality with the cottage's period character. The island with its pendant lights provides a contemporary focal point, while the materials and colour palette keep everything feeling warm and in keeping with the building. I shot both a wide angle showing the full kitchen layout and a tighter composition of the breakfast bar area, which helps guests picture themselves using the space for morning coffee or casual meals.

The owner had dressed the kitchen beautifully for the shoot: fresh flowers on the island, a few cookbooks propped against the splashback, and clear worktops with just enough accessories to feel homely rather than bare. This is exactly the kind of preparation that makes a real difference to the final images.

06The Bedroom

The bedroom continues the cottage's theme of original character paired with modern comfort. The exposed stone wall is a feature that guests genuinely love, and the soft pink throw and quality bedding communicate luxury without being over-the-top. I always recommend that holiday let owners invest in good bedding and photograph it freshly made, because the bedroom shot is often the second image guests look at after the main listing photo.

07The Bathroom

The bathroom features brass fittings, warm lighting, and quality finishes that elevate it well beyond a standard holiday let. Brass taps, a large mirror, and carefully chosen accessories create a boutique-hotel feel. I shot this with all the lights on and the door open to maximise the sense of space, because bathrooms can easily look cramped and dark in photographs if you're not careful with the lighting.

08The Details

Detail shots serve a specific purpose in holiday let listings. The arched window, with its deep stone reveal and original proportions, tells guests this is a genuine period building with real architectural character, not a modern build dressed up to look old. The stable door with its original ironwork reinforces the cottage's authenticity and charm.

These are the images that help justify a premium nightly rate. They communicate craftsmanship, history, and attention to detail, qualities that luxury guests actively seek out when choosing where to stay.

09Dressing Advice: What Made the Difference

The owner followed the preparation guidance closely, and it shows in the final images. Here's what we discussed before the shoot:

  • Throws and cushions on every seating area, layered for texture and warmth rather than placed symmetrically
  • Fresh flowers on the kitchen island and living room side table, adding colour and life
  • Cleared surfaces with just two or three tasteful accessories per area, avoiding both clutter and the "show home" emptiness
  • All lamps and candles lit to create warm, layered lighting that complements the natural daylight
  • Quality bedding freshly made, with the throw folded at the foot of the bed
  • Bathroom styled with fresh towels, a candle, and one or two premium toiletries visible

The difference between a well-dressed property and an unprepared one is significant. It's not about spending money on new items, it's about presenting what you already have in the most appealing way possible.

10Why Professional Photography Matters for Cotswolds Holiday Lets

The Cotswolds is one of the most competitive short-term rental markets in the UK. Guests searching for a luxury cottage have dozens of options within any given area, and the listing photos are almost always the deciding factor in which properties get clicked on and which get scrolled past.

For a property like Granary Cottage, with genuine architectural character and thoughtful interior styling, professional photography ensures that quality is communicated clearly. Smartphone photos taken in flat lighting would miss the warmth of the stone, the texture of the beams, and the cosy atmosphere that makes this cottage special.
