Valley Property Photography: Capturing a Private Estate in Great Elm, Near Bath

This one in Great Elm, just outside Bath, is defined entirely by the landscape it sits within, a private valley with a river running through it, mature woodland climbing the hillsides, and a sense of seclusion that feels almost impossible this close to a city.

This was not a standard property shoot. The brief was clear from the outset: capture the lifestyle, not just the house. The property itself is beautiful, but what makes it extraordinary is the relationship between the building and the land around it. Every window frames a different view of the valley. Every outdoor space connects to the river, the trees, or the open sky. The photography needed to communicate that feeling of immersion in nature, the sense that you are stepping into your own private world the moment you arrive.

01The Setting

Great Elm sits in a quiet valley between Frome and Mells, where the landscape drops away from the road into a wooded river valley that feels genuinely remote. The property occupies a significant portion of this valley, with the river running directly through the grounds. It is the kind of setting that photographs cannot fully do justice to, but the goal was to get as close as possible.

The drone was essential for this shoot. From ground level, you can appreciate the gardens and the immediate surroundings, but only from the air can you truly understand the scale of the valley and how the property sits within it. The aerial shots show the river winding through the grounds, the mature trees lining the banks, and the way the land rises on both sides to create that sense of a private, enclosed world.

02The Approach

For a property like this, I knew from the start that a standard room-by-room approach would not work. The house is impressive, but it is the context that elevates it from a nice home to something genuinely special. So the shoot was structured around three layers: the landscape and setting, the outdoor living spaces, and the interiors, in that order of priority.

I arrived early to catch the morning light across the valley. The river was low and clear, the trees were in full leaf, and the light was filtering through the canopy in a way that gave everything a soft, natural warmth. These are the conditions you hope for on a shoot like this, and they made a significant difference to the final images.

03The Grounds and River

The river is the defining feature of this property. It runs through the valley floor, with the gardens and outdoor spaces arranged around it. There are paths along the banks, a bridge crossing, and several spots where you can sit and watch the water pass.

The grounds are extensive but not manicured in the formal sense. There is a wildness to them that feels intentional, with meadow areas, established trees, and planting that blends into the natural woodland on the valley sides. It is the kind of garden that has been allowed to develop over decades rather than being imposed on the landscape.

Rather than closing curtains or controlling the light artificially, I let the views through the windows remain visible in the shots, showing how the rooms relate to the landscape beyond.
