Google Street View for businesses is one of the most misunderstood products in local marketing. Some business owners think it's just a way to let people look at their shopfront from the street. Others assume it's the same as a full virtual tour. Neither is quite right. This post explains what Google Street View actually does for your local search presence, and where its limits are.
01What Google Street View for Businesses Actually Is
When most people think of Google Street View, they think of the blue lines on Google Maps that let you explore streets from a car-mounted camera. Business Street View is different. It's an interior 360° photography service that publishes a walkthrough of your business premises directly to your Google Business Profile and Google Maps listing.
When someone finds your business on Google Maps and clicks through to your listing, they can explore the interior before deciding whether to visit. The tour appears in the "See inside" section of your Business Profile, alongside your photos, reviews, and opening hours.
I'm an experienced Street View photographer, and I've published tours for businesses across Somerset, Bristol, Bath, and the South West. For full details and pricing, see the Google Street View page.
02What It Does for Local Search
The local search benefit of Street View is real, but it's worth being precise about what it is and isn't.
Google's local search algorithm uses engagement signals to rank businesses in local results. A business whose Google Maps listing gets more clicks, more time spent on it, and more interactions will tend to rank higher for relevant local searches. A Street View tour increases all of these metrics. Visitors spend longer on your listing when there's an interior tour to explore, and the "See inside" button is a clear invitation to engage.
Google has also confirmed that businesses with virtual tours receive twice as many requests for directions and twice as many phone calls as those without. For a restaurant, cafe, gym, or salon, this translates directly into more bookings and footfall.
The caveat is that Street View is a discovery and confidence tool, not a conversion tool in the way that a full bespoke tour is. It gets people through the door; it doesn't replace the experience of being there. A family choosing a care home, or a couple choosing a wedding venue, will want more than a Google Maps tour before making their decision. For those use cases, a bespoke 360° tour or Matterport scan is the right product.
03Who Benefits Most from Street View
Street View works best for businesses where the decision to visit is relatively low-stakes and where Google Maps is a primary discovery channel. Restaurants, cafes, pubs, bars, salons, gyms, retail shops, and similar businesses all fit this profile.
For these businesses, a potential customer might search "Italian restaurant Bristol" on Google Maps, see several options, and click through to the ones that look most appealing. A Street View tour gives your listing a visual advantage over competitors who only have static photos. The customer can see the atmosphere, the layout, the size of the dining room, and whether the space feels right for their occasion, all before leaving the house.
Street View is also a strong add-on for businesses that already have a bespoke tour or Matterport scan. The bespoke tour lives on your website and converts visitors; the Street View listing gets people to find you on Google in the first place.
04What Street View Doesn't Do
It's worth being honest about the limits. Street View is Google's product, not yours. You have no control over the branding, the interface, or the presentation. You can't add hotspots, information panels, or booking links. The tour lives on Google's platform, and while you can embed it on your own website via an iframe, it's not as seamless as a dedicated bespoke tour.
Street View also doesn't generate the kind of immersive, branded experience that converts a browsing visitor into a paying customer for high-consideration purchases. A wedding couple choosing a venue, or a family choosing a care home, needs more than a Google Maps tour. For those situations, a bespoke tour is the right investment.
05The Upsell Logic
I position Street View as an entry-level product for a reason. It's affordable, it has no ongoing fees, and it delivers a clear, measurable benefit for local search. But for most businesses, it's the beginning of a virtual tour strategy, not the end.
The natural progression is: Street View gets you found on Google, a bespoke tour converts visitors once they arrive on your website. The two products complement each other rather than competing.
06Pricing and Booking
Google Street View pricing starts from £269 for a small business. There are no ongoing fees. Full pricing is on the pricing page.
