As a property photographer with over 17 years of experience covering Somerset and its beautiful surrounding areas, I've had the pleasure of shooting homes in some truly special places. Two locations that always stand out for their unique character and stunning coastal light are Clevedon and Portishead in North Somerset. They represent a fantastic blend of Victorian seaside charm and modern marina living, all within an easy commute of Bristol.
For estate agents and homeowners in this area, professional photography isn't just a nice-to-have; it's essential for capturing the lifestyle that comes with these coastal gems. In this guide, I'll share my insights on what makes these towns so special and how we can best showcase their properties.
01Clevedon: Victorian Elegance by the Sea
There's something timeless about Clevedon. The first thing that comes to mind is its magnificent Grade I listed Victorian pier, stretching gracefully into the Bristol Channel. It’s a landmark that instantly defines the town and provides a stunning backdrop. The entire seafront has a sense of preserved history, lined with elegant Victorian villas and grand townhouses, many of which have been converted into spacious apartments.
When I'm photographing a property in Clevedon, especially one of these period homes, the goal is to capture that sense of history and space. These properties often boast high ceilings, large bay windows, and original features. This is where my preference for using natural light and High Dynamic Range (HDR) techniques really comes into its own. The soft, diffused coastal light that streams through those large windows is a photographer's dream. It allows me to create images that feel bright, airy, and true to life, highlighting the architectural details without the harshness that can sometimes come from using flash photography.
The property market here is diverse. You'll find everything from those substantial Victorian family homes, with average prices often ranging from £500,000 to £800,000, to more modern family homes and bungalows further from the coast. The variety is part of the appeal, and it's a joy to photograph such a wide range of styles.
02Portishead: Modern Marina Living
Just a short drive up the coast, Portishead offers a completely different, yet equally appealing, atmosphere. The transformation of the old docks into a vibrant, modern marina is nothing short of spectacular. It’s now a bustling hub with sleek apartment blocks, townhouses, and a lively waterfront with cafes and restaurants.
Photographing properties in Portishead, particularly around the marina, is all about capturing a contemporary, aspirational lifestyle. The architecture is clean and modern, with lots of glass and balconies to make the most of the water views. My drone is an indispensable tool here. An elevated shot showing a property's proximity to the water, the yachts bobbing in the marina, and the expanse of the Severn Estuary can be a powerful selling point. All my photography packages, from the £149 Starter to the £349 Ultimate, include drone photography for this very reason – it adds a perspective that ground-level shots simply can't match.
The property here is dominated by modern apartments and townhouses. A two-bedroom apartment with a marina view can fetch anywhere from £250,000 to £400,000. For agents selling these properties, showcasing the view and the lifestyle is paramount. I often schedule shoots to coincide with the 'golden hour' – just after sunrise or before sunset – when the light is warm and casts beautiful reflections on the water.
03Property Photography in Clevedon and Portishead: The Commuter Connection
One of the biggest draws for both Clevedon and Portishead is their fantastic connectivity. With Bristol just a short drive away, they are prime locations for commuters seeking a better quality of life by the sea. This is a key selling point that the photography should reflect – a sense of tranquil escape that's still connected to the vibrant city life of Bristol, where I also frequently work.
The quality of light in North Somerset is a consistent theme. The wide-open skies and reflections from the Bristol Channel create a soft, natural light that is incredibly flattering for property exteriors. It allows me to capture crisp, detailed shots that make a property look its absolute best. While some photographers achieve great results with complex flash setups, I find that harnessing this beautiful natural light with expert HDR blending produces the most authentic and inviting images.
From the historic charm of Clevedon to the modern buzz of Portishead, this corner of North Somerset offers a fantastic lifestyle. It’s a region I know well, just like nearby coastal towns such as Weston-super-Mare and Burnham-on-Sea. My job is to translate that unique local character into a set of stunning photographs that will stop potential buyers in their tracks.
