01A Photographer's Guide to Property in Bridgwater and the Somerset Levels
As a property photographer with over 17 years of experience covering Somerset and the surrounding areas, I've had the pleasure of capturing homes of all shapes and sizes. From the elegant townhouses of Bath to the quirky cottages of Glastonbury, each area has its own unique character. This time, I want to turn my lens towards a town that’s undergoing a fascinating transformation: Bridgwater, and the beautifully stark landscape that surrounds it, the Somerset Levels.
Bridgwater is a town with a rich industrial history, and right now, it’s a place of incredible change. The regeneration projects are breathing new life into the town centre and the historic docks. This, combined with the significant impact of the Hinkley Point C development, has created a dynamic and sometimes challenging housing market. For anyone looking to sell a property here, standing out is more important than ever, and that's where I come in.
02The Hinkley Effect and Bridgwater's Regeneration
The sheer scale of the Hinkley Point C project has had a ripple effect across the region. We've seen a huge demand for rental properties, which has in turn pushed up prices and created a fast-paced market. While this is great for landlords, it can be a challenge for local families and first-time buyers. I’ve spoken to many estate agents in Bridgwater who have seen properties let within hours of going on the market.
But it's not just about Hinkley. The Bridgwater Town Deal secured £23.2 million in funding, and we're starting to see the results. The work on the Celebration Mile is creating a better-connected town centre, and the plans to regenerate the historic Bridgwater Docks are particularly exciting. These projects are not just about new buildings; they're about creating a more attractive and vibrant place to live, which is fantastic news for the long-term property market. The goal is to make Bridgwater a destination, not just a thoroughfare, which will undoubtedly boost property values.
03Property Styles: From Town Centre Terraces to Levels Farmhouses
One of the things I love about working in this area is the sheer variety of properties. In Bridgwater town centre, you'll find an abundance of classic Victorian and Edwardian terraces. These homes often have wonderful period features, and my job is to bring them to life. This is where my preference for natural light and High Dynamic Range (HDR) photography really comes into its own. By blending multiple exposures, I can capture all the detail, from the bright light streaming through a bay window to the subtle textures in a period fireplace, without resorting to harsh flash photography. With average property prices in Bridgwater hovering around the £245,000 mark, it's crucial to showcase the value and character of these homes.
As you move out of the town and onto the Somerset Levels, the landscape and the architecture change dramatically. Here you’ll find charming farmhouses, many built from local stone, surrounded by acres of flat, open land. These properties offer a completely different photographic challenge. The sense of space and the huge skies are the key selling points. This is where drone photography, which I include in all my packages, becomes an essential tool. From the air, you can truly capture the unique setting of these homes, showing how they sit within the vast, beautiful expanse of the Levels. I also cover nearby areas like Burnham-on-Sea and Taunton, and it's always interesting to see the subtle shifts in architectural styles as you move across the county.
New builds are also a significant part of the picture, with several large developments popping up to meet the housing demand. These modern homes require a different approach. The key is to showcase the clean lines, modern fittings, and the sense of a fresh start they offer to buyers.
04The Unique Appeal of the Somerset Levels
The Somerset Levels is a landscape like no other in the UK. It’s a vast coastal plain and wetland area, characterized by its flatness and its network of rhynes and ditches. Some might see it as empty, but I see it as a place of incredible peace and stunning, minimalist beauty. For a photographer, it’s a dream. The low horizons and dramatic skies create a perfect backdrop for property photography, especially at sunrise or sunset.
The flatness of the Levels also makes it a unique location for drone photography. You can gain altitude and capture breathtaking panoramic views that would be impossible in a more hilly or wooded area. Showing a property in the context of this incredible landscape can be a powerful marketing tool, helping potential buyers from outside the area understand the unique lifestyle on offer.
05Standing Out in a Competitive Market
With so much happening in the Bridgwater property market, professional photography is no longer a luxury; it’s a necessity. Whether you're selling a modern new-build, a town centre terrace, or a remote farmhouse on the Levels, the first impression is almost always made online. High-quality images that tell a story and evoke a feeling are what will make potential buyers stop scrolling and book a viewing.
My approach is always to work with the natural character of the property. I use natural light wherever possible to create a bright, airy, and inviting feel. My HDR techniques ensure that every room is shown at its absolute best, with balanced light and vibrant, accurate colours. It’s about creating images that are not just technically perfect, but that also connect with people on an emotional level.
