As a property photographer with over 17 years of experience covering Somerset, Bristol, and Bath, I've seen a lot of architectural trends come and go. But one of the most exciting and enduring shifts I've witnessed is the rise of the eco-home. From the rolling hills of the Mendips to the bustling streets of Bristol, sustainable properties are becoming increasingly sought-after. And as a photographer, it's my job to capture not just their beauty, but their green credentials too. Somerset is seeing a surge in eco-homes and sustainable builds. As a property photographer in Somerset, I know how to showcase green features.
There's a growing market for eco-conscious living in our corner of the world. I've had the pleasure of photographing stunning sustainable new-builds near Glastonbury and beautifully retrofitted Victorian terraces in Bath. It's a testament to the fact that 'green' doesn't have to mean compromising on style. In fact, it often enhances it.
01Capturing Green Features: A Photographer's Guide
Photographing an eco-home requires a slightly different approach to a standard property. It's about telling a story of sustainability, efficiency, and smart design. Here’s how I approach some of the most common green features.
Solar Panels: The Power of the Drone
Solar panels are one of the most visible and recognizable eco-features. While they can be photographed from the ground, the best way to showcase them is from the air. That's why drone photography, which is included in all my packages, is so invaluable. An aerial shot can capture the full extent of the solar array, showing its scale and integration with the roofline. It also provides a unique perspective of the property and its surroundings, which is a great selling point. I always aim to shoot on a bright day to really make the panels pop, using the natural light to my advantage.
Heat Pumps and EPC Ratings: The Devil's in the Detail
Air source and ground source heat pumps are fantastic pieces of technology, but they can look a bit industrial if not photographed carefully. My approach is to frame them in the context of the home's exterior, perhaps with some soft planting in the foreground. It's about showing the functionality without it jarring with the overall aesthetic.
Similarly, a high EPC rating is a huge selling point. While you can't 'photograph' a rating, you can capture the features that contribute to it: thick insulation, triple-glazed windows, and modern, efficient boilers. I use my preferred HDR (High Dynamic Range) technique to balance the light and shadows in a room, which is perfect for highlighting the quality of a well-insulated space or the subtle sheen on a triple-glazed window.
Natural Materials and Green Roofs
One of my favourite aspects of photographing eco-homes is the use of natural materials. Exposed wooden beams, reclaimed stone walls, and bamboo flooring all add warmth and character. My job is to bring out the texture and tone of these materials. I do this by using natural light wherever possible, letting it fall across the surfaces to create depth and interest. This is where my 17 years of experience really comes into play, knowing how to read the light in a room and use it to my advantage.
Green roofs are another fantastic feature, and like solar panels, they often benefit from an aerial perspective. A drone shot can show the roof in its entirety, blending seamlessly with the surrounding landscape. It’s a powerful way to communicate the property's connection to nature.
02The Art of Subtlety: Avoiding the 'Industrial' Look
The key to successful eco-home photography is subtlety. It's not about creating a cold, clinical set of images that scream 'efficiency'. It's about weaving the green features into the broader narrative of the home. I focus on creating a warm and inviting atmosphere, showing that sustainability and comfort go hand-in-hand. This might mean capturing the way the light streams through a passive house's perfectly positioned windows, or the lushness of a garden that benefits from a rainwater harvesting system.
I find that my preference for natural light and HDR photography lends itself perfectly to this task. It allows me to create images that are both realistic and aspirational, which is exactly what you want when marketing a unique property. While other photographers might use flash or flambient techniques, I find that a natural approach often yields the most authentic and appealing results for these kinds of homes.
03The Growing Market in Somerset
Somerset is at the forefront of the sustainable property movement. From the eco-developments in towns like Frome and Bruton to the individual homeowners retrofitting their properties in Wells and Cheddar, there's a real passion for green living here. This presents a huge opportunity for estate agents and developers. By showcasing a property's eco-credentials through high-quality, professional photography, you can tap into this growing market and attract buyers who are willing to pay a premium for a home that aligns with their values.
Whether you're selling a state-of-the-art passive house or a charming cottage with a few eco-upgrades, I can help you tell its story. I cover all of Somerset, as well as Bristol, Bath, and the surrounding areas, and I'm always excited to take on a new challenge.
If you have a sustainable property that deserves to be shown in its best light, please don't hesitate to get in touch. I'd love to hear from you.
