01Meet The Property Photo Guy: My Journey in Somerset Based in Weston-super-Mare, I provide property photography in Bristol, Bath, and across Somerset.
Hello, I’m Matthew, the photographer behind The Property Photo Guy. It feels a bit strange to be in front of the camera for a change, but I wanted to properly introduce myself and share the story of how I turned a lifelong passion into my full-time profession here in the heart of beautiful Somerset.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a camera in my hand. It started as a hobby, a way to see the world differently and capture the moments that often go unnoticed. I’d spend my weekends exploring, from the dramatic cliffs of Cheddar Gorge to the serene waters of the Bristol Channel, always looking for that perfect shot. But it was the intersection of two of my great loves – photography and architecture – that truly set me on this path.
02From Passion to Profession: The Birth of The Property Photo Guy
I’ve always been fascinated by buildings, by the way a space can feel, and how light can completely transform a room. I started taking photos of properties for friends and family, and I quickly realised that this was more than just a hobby. There’s a unique challenge in capturing the essence of a home, in telling its story through images. It’s about more than just documenting a space; it’s about evoking a feeling, creating a connection, and inspiring someone to imagine their future within those walls.
That realisation was the spark that led me to specialise in property photography. Over the past 17 years, I’ve honed my craft, developing a style that is both authentic and impactful. I’ve had the privilege of shooting everything from charming country cottages in Frome to modern apartments in the heart of Bristol, and each property has taught me something new.
03My Approach: Natural Light and Honest Representation
My philosophy is simple: to represent every property in its best and most natural light. That’s why I’m a huge advocate for using natural light and High Dynamic Range (HDR) techniques. While other photographers achieve great results with flash or flambient setups, I find that nothing compares to the authentic warmth and atmosphere that natural light provides. It allows me to create images that are bright, airy, and, most importantly, true to life. My goal is for potential buyers to walk into a viewing and feel that the home is exactly as they imagined it from the photographs.
This commitment to authenticity is one of my core values. I believe in being honest, reliable, and delivering the highest quality work for every single client. Whether you’re an estate agent in Bath or a homeowner in Weston-super-Mare, you can trust that I will pour the same level of dedication and care into your project.
04A Day in the Life of a Somerset Photographer
A typical day for me is an early start, often checking the weather forecast the night before to plan the best time for exterior shots. I love the variety that this job brings. One day I might be capturing a stunning Georgian townhouse in Bath, the next a sprawling farmhouse near Glastonbury Tor. I cover a wide area, including not just Somerset but also Bristol, Burnham-on-Sea, and the beautiful surrounding countryside. Each area has its own unique character, and I love reflecting that in my work.
My favourite properties to shoot are those with a bit of character. A period home with original features, a barn conversion with vaulted ceilings, or a modern build with clever architectural details – these are the projects that really get my creative juices flowing. And of course, living in Somerset provides a breathtaking backdrop for it all. The rolling hills, the historic towns, and the unique blend of city and country life make it an incredible place to live and work.
