Quick Answer

Somerset property photography covers diverse property types: rural farmhouses and barns, coastal properties in Burnham-on-Sea and Minehead, market town homes in Frome and Glastonbury, new developments across Taunton and Bridgwater, and luxury estates in the Mendip Hills. Each area has specific challenges (weather, access, light conditions). The Property Photo Guy covers all of Somerset from a central base, with no travel charge within the county, packages from £149.

Somerset is one of England's most varied counties for property. From the coastal towns of the west to the market towns of the east, from the Quantock Hills to the Somerset Levels, the county offers everything from thatched cottages to modern developments. As a property photographer who has covered every corner of Somerset for over 17 years, here's my complete guide to property photography across the county.

01Somerset's Property Landscape

Somerset's property market is diverse in a way that few other counties can match. Within a 30-minute drive, you might photograph a medieval farmhouse, a Victorian villa, a 1930s semi, and a brand-new eco home. Each requires a different photographic approach, and understanding the local market is essential for producing images that resonate with buyers.

The county divides roughly into four distinct areas, each with its own property character:

West Somerset and Exmoor: Characterised by stone cottages, farmhouses, and properties with dramatic moorland views. Buyers here are often looking for rural retreats, second homes, or equestrian properties.

The Quantock Hills and Taunton: A mix of village properties, market town homes, and rural estates. Taunton itself has a growing modern development sector alongside its period core.

The Somerset Levels and Glastonbury: Flat, open landscapes with isolated farmhouses, converted barns, and village properties. The Levels have a unique character that photography needs to capture.

Mendip and East Somerset: Including Wells, Frome, Shepton Mallet, and the surrounding villages. Strong period property market with growing interest from Bristol and Bath buyers seeking more space.

02Photographing Rural Somerset Properties

Rural properties are Somerset's speciality, and they present unique photographic opportunities and challenges.

Farmhouses and Country Houses

Somerset's farmhouses range from medieval longhouses to Georgian manor houses. The key to photographing them well is showing both the building and its setting. A farmhouse without its surrounding land is only half the story.

Drone photography is essential for rural Somerset properties. From the ground, you see a nice stone building. From 30 metres up, you see the five acres of paddock, the views across the Levels, the orchard, and the fact that the nearest neighbour is half a mile away. I include drone photography in every package from £149.

Timing matters: Rural properties often look their best in the golden hour, when warm light brings out the colour of Somerset stone and creates long shadows that add depth and drama. I schedule shoots accordingly when possible.

Show the approach: Many rural properties are accessed via long driveways or country lanes. The approach is part of the experience, and a drone shot following the drive to the house creates a sense of arrival that buyers respond to.

Barn Conversions

Somerset has a strong market in barn conversions, and they need photography that shows both the original character and the modern intervention. Key shots include:

  • The exterior showing original stonework and roof
  • Interior shots emphasising height, beams, and original features
  • Detail shots of the contrast between old and new (stone walls meeting modern kitchen, beams above contemporary furniture)
  • The setting and any retained agricultural character

Thatched Cottages

Somerset's thatched cottages are among the county's most photographed properties, but they need careful handling:

  • Shoot the exterior when the thatch is dry and in good condition
  • Show the cottage in its village context
  • Interior shots should emphasise the character (low beams, inglenook fireplaces, uneven floors)
  • Be honest about ceiling heights, as buyers need realistic expectations

03Photographing Somerset's Market Towns

Taunton

As Somerset's county town, Taunton has a diverse property market ranging from period townhouses to modern developments. Photography here needs to show proximity to the town centre, transport links (the railway station), and the surrounding countryside.

Wells

England's smallest city has a premium property market driven by the Cathedral, the Bishop's Palace, and the medieval streetscape. Properties here often have historical significance, and photography should reflect that.

Frome

Frome has become one of Somerset's most desirable towns, attracting creative professionals and families from Bristol and London. The town's independent character is a selling point, and photography should show properties in their Frome context.

Glastonbury

Glastonbury has a unique market driven by its spiritual associations and the Tor. Properties here range from period cottages to larger rural homes, and the town's distinctive character should be reflected in the photography.

Shepton Mallet

Shepton Mallet is experiencing growing interest as buyers are priced out of nearby Bath and Frome. Photography should show the town's period architecture and its proximity to both the Mendips and the A37/A303 corridors.

04Photographing Coastal Somerset

Somerset's coast stretches from Minehead in the west to Burnham-on-Sea in the east, with Watchet, Blue Anchor, and Brean in between. Coastal properties have specific photographic needs:

Sea views are the priority. If a property has a sea view, it needs to be the hero shot. Drone photography is particularly effective for showing coastal properties in their seaside context.

Weather creates drama. Unlike inland properties where overcast days are often preferred, coastal properties can look stunning in dramatic weather. Storm light, sunset colours, and moody skies all add atmosphere.

Show the lifestyle. Coastal buyers are buying a lifestyle as much as a property. Include shots that show proximity to the beach, coastal paths, and the harbour.

07Seasonal Considerations in Somerset

Somerset looks different in every season, and this affects property photography:

Spring (March-May): Gardens coming to life, blossom, fresh green. Excellent for properties with significant outdoor space.

Summer (June-August): Long days, warm light, gardens at their best. The busiest season for property photography.

Autumn (September-November): Golden light, autumn colours, dramatic skies. Somerset's countryside looks stunning in autumn.

Winter (December-February): Shorter days but beautiful low-angle light. Properties with fireplaces and cosy interiors photograph well in winter.

I photograph throughout the year and adapt my approach to the season. The key is working with the available light rather than fighting against it.
